Denmark out of the Euros after defeat to Germany

Read Time:1 Minute, 56 Second

Denmark played Saturday evening against Germany in the round of 16 at the European Championship in football.

The German team applied pressure on Denmark from the start, and after four minutes, the ball was headed into the Danish goal. Much to the dismay of the German home crowd, the goal was disallowed.

A few minutes later, Joshua Kimmich attempted a long-range shot towards the Danish goal, but it was saved by Kasper Schmeichel. Schmeichel then made another save from a subsequent corner.

It took around 20 minutes into the first half for Denmark to get their first opportunity, as Christian Eriksen controlled a long ball and shot towards the goal, only to be blocked for a corner.

The match was interrupted due to severe thunderstorms. After a short half-hour break, play resumed. The involuntary pause seemed to rejuvenate the hosts, who came close to taking the lead shortly after the game resumed.

Denmark came close to scoring twice just before halftime, both times involving Rasmus Højlund. The first attempt hit the side netting, and the second was thwarted by the German goalkeeper.

Thus, the two teams went into halftime with the score tied at 0-0.

Early in the second half, Danish fans erupted in cheers while the Germans held their heads, as Joachim Andersen put the ball into the German net. However, the joy was short-lived for the Danes, as the goal was disallowed for offside.

Joachim Andersen literally gave a hand to the Germans when he handled the ball during a German cross, resulting in a penalty after a VAR check. Kai Havertz confidently converted the penalty past Kasper Schmeichel to make it 1-0 to the hosts.

Germany had a few more good opportunities but couldn’t convert before Jamal Musiala made it 2-0.

Denmark tried to press the Germans towards the end but without success.

As the referee blew the final whistle, the Danes had to accept that with a 2-0 scoreline favoring the hosts, Denmark was out of the European Championship.
