DMI warns of dangerous weather – expecting up to 80 mm of rain
The Danish Meteorological Institute, DMI, has issued a warning of heavy rain and local cloudbursts, with expectations of up to 80 mm of rain within a day. This also applies to the capital area.
In the southern and southwestern parts of the country, between Friday evening and Saturday evening, 25-35 mm of rain is expected within 6 hours or throughout the entire warning period. This involves a category 1 warning for “violent weather.” The warning is valid from Friday at 17:00 to Saturday at 17:00.
In the rest of the country – except for the northern part of Jutland – a category 2 warning for “dangerous weather” has been issued. Here, between 50 and 80 mm of rain is expected during the warning period, with the possibility of more rain locally. This warning is valid from Friday at 20:00 to Saturday at 20:00.
For the northernmost part of Jutland, DMI has issued a risk alert, as it is uncertain how heavy the rain will be in that area. DMI states that it may change to an actual warning if necessary. The risk alert for the northernmost Jutland is valid from midnight on Friday night to midnight on Sunday night.
The reason for the warning is that a low-pressure system with associated fronts is forming over Belgium on Friday due to the boundary between warm and humid air over Eastern and Central Europe and cooler air over Western Europe. The low-pressure system and fronts are expected to move north towards Denmark and are expected to bring significant amounts of rain over a large part of the country from Friday evening to Saturday evening.
