Five youths convicted in case of robbery and extortion of a 24-year-old man
Five young individuals were convicted on Tuesday at the Court in Sønderborg in a case where they were charged with robbery, extortion, and witness intimidation.
Some of the accused pretended to be a minor on a dating app and used that to lure a person into meeting with them, claiming the person was a pedophile. They then took matters into their own hands.
The 24-year-old man who met with the youths was subjected to violence and forced to transfer money to them when they met on the evening of July 9th at a wastewater treatment plant in Tønder Kommune. The following day, he was further subjected to threats, robbery, and extortion.
There were five defendants in the case – four men and one woman, and all were found guilty.
Two of the men were sentenced to 1 year of unconditional imprisonment. They are a 19-year-old man and a 21-year-old man, both of whom accepted the verdict.
The other 19-year-old defendant in the case was sentenced to 10 months of unconditional imprisonment. He was solely charged in the first instance which involved robbery on July 9th. He appealed the sentence on the spot.
The 21-year-old female defendant was also sentenced to 10 months in prison. She accepted the verdict.
The 23-year-old male defendant was sentenced to 8 months in prison. He was charged in two instances and acquitted of witness intimidation. He accepted the verdict.
Prosecutor Minela Dedukic from the Prosecution Service at South Jutland Police is satisfied that all five were convicted in the case:
“The verdict is a reminder that one should not take the law into their own hands. If you become aware of criminal acts, you should report it to the police. In the prosecution service, we are satisfied that the court has treated this case with the same seriousness as we have. The court has largely agreed with our interpretation of the case.”
All five defendants had been remanded in custody.
