On Monday, the expansion of Copenhagen Airport Station was formally kicked off by Lord Mayor Lars Weiss of Copenhagen Municipality, Mayor Allan S. Andersen of Tårnby Municipality, and CEO Mikkel Hemmingsen of Sund & Bælt, the project’s developer.

The Øresund Railway with Copenhagen Airport Station as a hub is crucial for the transportation of goods and people between Denmark, the rest of Scandinavia, and Europe. It is one of the busiest railway lines in Denmark with over 6,000 trains per month. Additionally, there is expected to be more railway traffic when the Fehmarn Belt Tunnel to Germany opens.

To ensure capacity on the line, Sund & Bælt will be expanding Copenhagen Airport Station over the next two years. This includes creating two new platforms, improving existing platforms, and establishing a connection to the new platforms from the airport’s Terminal 3.

Lord Mayor Lars Weiss emphasized in his speech the importance of easier access for train passengers to and from Copenhagen Airport.

“This is not just an important project for Copenhagen, but for the entire region. By expanding Copenhagen Airport Station, we improve access to the airport, allowing travelers to choose an environmentally friendly and efficient form of travel,” said Lars Weiss.

The Øresund Railway runs through Tårnby Municipality, and Mayor Allan S. Andersen highlighted the municipality’s central location on the map of Denmark.

“Tårnby Municipality has a unique position as the link between Sweden and Denmark. The better the train connections become, the easier it is for all travelers to choose the train over the car. This makes it easy to travel further into the country or take a trip to Malmö in Sweden,” said Allan S. Andersen.

At the developer Sund & Bælt, CEO Mikkel Hemmingsen stressed the importance of the project and its connection to Europe.

“This line is not only important for Denmark but for Europe as well. It is part of the trans-European transport network, serving as the axis linking the rest of Scandinavia to Europe. Therefore, the expansion is an important project supported by the EU,” said Mikkel Hemmingsen.

Aarsleff A/S is the contractor for the expansion of Copenhagen Airport Station, and it is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
