Denmark’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, had a conversation on Friday with the new U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs provided this information.

The conversation focused on Ukraine, European security, and the situation in the Middle East.

Arctic security was not on the agenda, but there was agreement that it should be discussed among the USA, Denmark, and Greenland at a later date.

The conversation took place in a positive and constructive tone and lasted for 20 minutes. There was agreement that the Danish-American relationship is strong, and it was agreed to maintain close contact in the future and meet in person as soon as possible.

In the meantime, discussions continue at the official level in Washington.

Regarding burden-sharing in NATO, the Minister of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Europe – and Denmark – are ready to take on a greater share of responsibility for their own security.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs mentioned the importance of ongoing support for Ukraine.

He highlighted that Ukraine is not just fighting for its own survival, but for the security of all of Europe and the West.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also stated that Denmark is prepared to further increase pressure on Russia, including by implementing new sanctions and taking even stronger actions against Russia’s shadow fleet.

Additionally, the Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed gratitude for the leadership of the USA in brokering a ceasefire in Gaza and underscored the need to work together towards the goal of a lasting two-state solution.
