On Tuesday evening at 8:00 PM local time, the polling stations in Greenland closed – at least most of them did, as in Nuuk, there were still many people waiting in line to cast their vote. So many, in fact, that the closing had to be postponed.

The election for the Greenlandic parliament, Inatsisartut, has received more attention than usual after U.S. President Donald Trump began to speak about Greenland following his inauguration on January 20th. Most recently, this Monday, he talked about investing billions in Greenland and making the Greenlanders rich.

Greenlanders could vote for six different parties in Tuesday’s election: Inuit Ataqatigiit (party leader Múte Bourup Egede), Siumut (party leader Erik Jensen), Partii Naleraq (party leader Pele Broberg), Demokraterne (party leader Jens Frederik Nielsen), Atassut (party leader Aggalu Jerimiassen), Qulleq (party leader Karl Ingemann).

A total of 31 members are to be elected to Inatsisartut.

The election result is expected to be available early Wednesday morning, Danish time.
