Is your car ready for the low emission zones?
As of October 1st 2023, diesel-powered passenger cars must have a particulate filter or be at least Euro 5 in order to be used legally in the low emission zones.
The rules apply whether you are a resident or a visitor.
If the car does not have a particle filter, it can be retrofitted at a workshop, after which the car must pass an inspection.
The inspection of diesel cars is carried out automatically through control points with license plate recognition in the low emission zones. In case of violation of the low emission zones rules, the fine for passenger cars is 1,500 DKK.
Both the Copenhagen Municipality and the Frederiksberg Municipality have introduced the low emission zones (Miljøzone) to reduce pollution from traffic. The new regulations for passenger cars also apply in Aalborg, Aarhus, and Odense from October 1st.
There are already requirements for particle filters in place for vans, buses, and trucks.
