Denmark’s Nationalbank Prepares New Coins for Reign of King Frederik 10

Danmarks Nationalbank is now commencing work to prepare coins featuring the new monarch, following the proclamation of H.M. King Frederik 10 as the king of Denmark.

So far, the Nationalbank has minted coins with the portrait of the monarch as the motif on the obverse of the 10- and 20-kroner coins and the monarch’s monogram on the 1-, 2-, and 5-kroner coins. The Nationalbank is now beginning the process of updating the design of Danish coins. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with the Royal House, according to the Nationalbank.

There is also a tradition of issuing so-called succession coins when Denmark gets a new monarch, as was the case most recently in 1972 when Queen Margrethe 2 ascended to the throne following the death of King Frederik 9. The Nationalbank has also started work on preparing the special coins that mark the succession.

Coin minting is a time-consuming process. The final design must be crafted and then minted through special production processes. Therefore, it is expected that the coins will not be available until around the turn of the year.

The new coins will not replace the current coins but will be put into circulation alongside existing coins.
