Man convicted for smuggling more than 700,000 pills
A 33-year-old male Bosnian citizen was convicted on Thursday by the Court in Sønderborg for smuggling more than 700,000 pills.
The 33-year-old has confessed to smuggling pills across the Danish-German border with the intention of distribution or resale.
The smuggling took place on February 21 this year, where the convicted individual and a co-passenger were stopped in a car at the Danish-German border. Pills were found during a check of the car, and a subsequent search revealed large quantities of pills in cardboard boxes. An inventory showed that it involved the smuggling of over 760,000 pills, including 254,646 Tramadol tablets and 300,300 Alprazolam tablets.
In addition to the convicted individual, another man was in the car who was also detained and later remanded in custody in the case. The prosecution has not found sufficient evidence that he was aware of what was being transported in the car, which is why the charges against him were dropped.
The Court sentenced the 33-year-old to 3 years and 6 months in prison, and he was permanently expelled from Denmark.
The Prosecution at the South and South Jutland Police Department are satisfied with the verdict:
“The Court has followed the prosecution’s demand in the case and stresses with the imposed sentence that it involves a very large quantity of pills of both dangerous and harmful nature.”, says Assistant Prosecutor Katrine Tranekjer.
The 33-year-old requested time to consider appealing the sentence.
He has been in custody since the arrest and remains in custody after the sentence.
