Denmark in Olympic final after victory over Slovenia
After a dramatic ending in the semifinal against Slovenia on Friday evening, the Danish men’s handball team managed to secure a spot in the Olympic final.
Things were going well in the first half, with Denmark quickly taking the lead and keeping Slovenia at bay, leading 15-10 in Denmark’s favor at halftime.
After the break, Slovenia managed to close the gap on the Danes. But following a timeout with words of encouragement from coach Nikolaj Jacobsen, Denmark once again extended their lead.
However, as the game neared its end, it became too close for comfort. After a few misses from the Danish side, the score suddenly became 31-29. It was further reduced to 31-30 with a few seconds left in the game. Slovenia was awarded a free-throw – the referees had to check the video screen to make sure there wasn’t a penalty shot instead. Time ran out, but the throw needed to be taken, and Borut Mačkovšek was the one taking it. Luckily for the Danes, he sent it over the goal.
With that, Denmark emerged as the victor and will face Germany in the final on Sunday.
