Windy and Rainy Weather can Send Fireworks on a Dangerous Course New Year’s Eve

Read Time:1 Minute, 25 Second

The weather forecast for New Year’s Eve includes wind and rain. This affects how fireworks behave, and therefore requires extra caution when handling fireworks.

The Safety Authority encourages everyone to be extra mindful of safety distances to minimize the risk of fireworks accidents.

“New Year’s Eve is just around the corner, but the weather forecast demands that we exercise greater caution. Wind and rain can make fireworks behave unpredictably, increasing the risk of injuries and fires,” says Nicoline Zederkof Jensen, Head of Department at the Safety Authority.

Up to double the safety distance

To increase safety, the Safety Authority recommends that the distance to buildings and combustible vegetation should be doubled when it’s windy. This means there should be at least 20 meters to openings in buildings, and one should stay at least 400 meters away from buildings with thatched roofs and flammable materials.

In rainy weather, it is recommended to take out one firework at a time and store the rest in a dry place. This way, it won’t be left outside and soaked by the rain before lighting.

“With the weather conditions we have, there is a risk that the fireworks will get wet. This can lead to unstable explosions, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Strong winds can send fireworks off course, so it’s extra important to observe safety distances. This applies to both igniters and spectators,” adds Nicoline Zederkof Jensen.
