Queen Margrethe Becomes Denmark’s Longest-Reigning Monarch in History

Her Majesty the Queen is the longest-reigning monarch in Danish history.
Until now, it has been Christian IV who has spent the longest time on the throne. He was barely 11 years old when he was selected as king upon his father’s death in 1588. The country was temporarily governed by a regency until Christian IV was installed as king in 1596. He reigned until his death in February 1648, which is approximately 51 years and six months.
However, in the middle of this month, Queen Margrethe will surpass him. She ascended to the throne on January 14, 1972, following her father, Frederick IX.
The Danish royal lineage dates back to Gorm the Old around the year 936.
